SophoMORE Brunch Friday April 27th

Hey Class of 2015! There will be a brunch to celebrate your rising sophomore status on Friday, April 27th from 9-11AM in Berkshire and Franklin Dining Halls. So go and and celebrate finishing your first year at UMass, and pick up some advice from faculty and staff in attendance about the next phase of your college journey!

Attention: Finals fast approaching!

Tuesday (May 1st) is the last day of classes, and finals begin a week from today! Now is the time to take hold of your academics and wrap up your semester on a positive note. Try out some of these tips for a stress-free finals week:

  1. Make sure you know if your exams are cumulative. Cumulative exams will cover more material and including some material you probably haven't seen since the first half of the semester. Try this 5 Day Study Plan to help manage your workload and time.
  2. It's also important to know the format of each exam. Is the exam multiple choice? True/False? Fill-in-the-Blank or Short Answer? Essay? You'll want to prepare differently for each type of exam, so knowing what to expect on test day is step one.
  3. Not sure where to begin? Knowing what type of learner you are can help you tailor your study methods to those that work best for you! Try this learning styles inventory to discover study strategies that will work best for you.
  4. Try forming a study group with classmates. Study groups can help keep you motivated and discussing course concepts with others can actually increase your ability to commit such information to long-term memory!
  5. Whatever you do, don't let the Ten Traps of Studying get you!
  6. Finally, don't forget to utilize campus resources. Many classes offer review sessions and most courses have TAs available to help clarify material. The Learning Resource Center in the library offers FREE peer-to-peer tutoring (by appointment only during finals week) and the Writing Center is a great place to have any essays or final papers reviewed before you hand them in.
Good luck!

Integrative Experience (IE) GenEd Requirement

What's the IE requirement?  Do I have to take it?

WHO?  If you entered UMass Amherst (as a freshman or transfer) in Fall 2010 or later, you will need to take the Integrative Experience course as part of your GenEd requirements.  Any students who entered F10 or later who will complete all graduation requirements - except the IE - for graduation in May or September 2012 may appeal for a waiver of the requirement (see your advisor or academic dean for more information).  Transfer students who entered the University for the first time in Fall 2010 or Spring 2011 and brought in 57 or more transfer credits prior to enrollment were granted a waiver of the Integrative Experience.

WHAT?  Programs, majors, departments, Schools or Colleges will offer the 3-credit IE themselves and/or they will arrange with others to offer various options for satisfying the upper division Integrative Experience requirement.  Check with your major department or your ARR (on SPIRE) for more details.

WHEN?  Plan to take your IE course in your junior or senior year, after you have completed most or all of your other GenEd requirements.

WHERE?  The IE requirement appears on your Academic Requirements Report in SPIRE, after your Gen Ed Diversity requirements.  The IE requirement is associated with your primary major, and only courses/options approved by that department can be used to satisfy the requirement. Specific courses that will fulfill your IE requirement are listed on your Academic Requirements Report.

WHY?  The upper-division integrative experience (IE) provides students with a structured opportunity to look back on their early college (and GenEd) learning experiences, reflect upon and make connections between those earlier experiences and the more advanced work in their major, and use their integrated learning to prepare for the demands of the world beyond the University.
